My wife and I just returned to the United States after embarking on a remarkable journey around the world for the past 3 years. During our adventure, we explored 25 out of the 50 states, visited 9 different countries, and even lived in South Africa for over 2 years. Our experiences showed us that the world is a big and breathtaking place, filled with incredible people and captivating sights.
Reflecting on our travels, here are a few valuable insights I wish I had known before setting off on this incredible journey:
1. Communication
Set up a Google Voice number for affordable calls back to the USA and dual authentication for banks and credit cards.
Consider purchasing a local SIM card from the airport or convenience store. The airport will be more convenient, but the convenience store will be cheaper.
Apps like Airalo offer data-only plans in over 200 countries that you can purchase before leaving home.
2. Finances
Carry cash for places that prefer cash payments, like taxis and street vendors.
The weaker the currency, the worse the exchange rate becomes. Use US Dollar, Euro, or Pound for better exchange rates.
Opt for a debit card with zero international transaction fees for cash withdrawals.
If given the option to withdraw cash with conversion or without conversion, choose without conversion. Your debit or credit card company will give you the best exchange rate and can save you up to 10% compared to the ATM or card processor.
Ensure your credit card has 0% international transaction fees.
I had issues with my American Express in Asia. I would highly recommend carrying a Visa or Mastercard as they are widely accepted.
3. Luggage
If possible, carry on your luggage.
I used a Nomadic Travel Bag 30 L and Carry on Classic. They are worth every penny.
4. Transportation
Use ride-hailing apps like Uber or regional alternatives.
Carry cash for taxis, buses, and ride-hailing services. Outside of Uber, they never accepted my credit card.
Communicate clearly with drivers and agree on prices in advance.
Airport lounges are worth it. Check with your credit card company as they often offer free entry or discounts to access lounges.
5. Medical Insurance
Credit card insurance policies may have limitations, but are extremely affordable.
Check out a medical share plan like Samaritans Ministries if you are going abroad long term. It is not exactly insurance, but can cover you in case of an accident worldwide.
6. Accommodation
Choosing accommodation nearby your destination saves time and enhances the overall experience.
Once you arrive at your hotel, ask if upgraded rooms are available. If they are, you might be able to get a really good deal.
7. Practical Items to Pack
Carry a pop-up washing basket for doing laundry in foreign countries.
Carry a small one-charge power pack. Anything else is usually excessive.
Carry a water bottle. I searched high and low and found the Contigo AUTOSEAL 24 oz water bottle.
Consider a camping pillow for better sleep quality during travels.
8. Entertainment
Carry an HDMI cable and HDMI to USBC adapter to connect devices to TVs worldwide.
This provides familiarity and reduces culture shock.
9. Online Privacy
Utilize a VPN to protect your online privacy and access restricted websites while traveling.
I really like Expressvpn.
If you've been dreaming of travelling, I highly recommend pursuing that desire. It can be a life-changing experience that you will never forget or regret. Feel free to reach out if you need any recommendations; I'll be delighted to assist you. Safe travels!
