During a recent dinner with a friend and his wife, an issue came up. The friend, a solo entrepreneur, spends his days confined to a small room in their house, immersed in work. Unfortunately, every evening during dinner with his family, the conversation inevitably revolves around work. She said, "I want my husband back, and the kids want their dad back. We don't want to talk about work during every dinner!"
This struggle resonates with many leaders, entrepreneurs, and managers I've spoken to. Spending hours engrossed in complex problems, isolated within the confines of their business, they crave someone who will truly listen and ask the right questions at the right time. Sadly, they believe there are few trustworthy individuals to turn to or who can truly understand what they are going through.
I think many times we see this as a preoccupation with work. However, I see it differently. I see it as excitement. You have been working hard, wanting to do a good job, and finally got the answers you sought. You finally have a plan to move forward. Nonetheless, these conversations at home or over dinner really prevent us from fully enjoying and engaging with our families. As cliché as it may sound, time really does go by fast. You don’t want to miss making memories with your family.
What you truly need is an external perspective, someone outside your usual sphere of influence, who will listen and ask the right questions at the right time. You can get the benefits even before you arrive home by seeking the right support. As someone who understands the challenges of leadership, I offer soundboard sessions to help individuals just like you reclaim family time.
